Snyder has surprised us again. He has found a way to twist a mundane mystery into an tug-of-war between church and state, between constitutional law and church law. In order to get give and take from both sides, he cleverly uses their own personality weaknesses against the key players. Unfortunately that only moves the solution of the mystery to a place where it is sort of obvious who committed the murder but not necessarily enough to convict. Then comes the peripeteia! (Yes, that is a real word and it is significant.)In the past, I have found my self "fitting into" the Jonas Kirk lifestyle. Now I'm not so sure. Like Devlin, the detective in these murders, I am quietly, discreetly beginning to wonder about Kirk and whether he is actually what he wants us to think he is.
Do yourself a favor. Start with the first book in the series and read them all so you can watch Kirk's personality develop and the stories evolve. I have certainly enjoyed these relatively short reads and look forward to the next escapade.

As a non Catholic, I learned a lot about the hierarchy of the Church in Penance from Dick Snyder, a former alter boy. Have yourself a few hours of entertainment, and read the Jonas Kirk mysteries.
This is the fourth book in Dick Snyder’s Jonas Kirk mystery series. Jonas is well-named when it comes to murder, which seems to follow him around. He is a lapsed Catholic, but decides to stop in at the local church. He sits quietly, observing the sinners entering and leaving the confession booth. The usually observant Jonas fails to notice a murder that takes place in a near-by pew.
Jonas and Detective Chester Devlin face the usual problems of police investigations, but in this case also have to confront the sanctity of what is said in the confession booth, sanctity guarded by a timid priest and an arrogant bishop. Good work by Dick Snyder
